Canada 150

The differences betwixt Canada & other countries -- too most especially our neighbour, the the States -- are frequently remarked upon too pondered, too most especially at this fourth dimension of year, every bit both countries score their national holidays (Canada Day for us on July 1st;  Independence Day for the Americans on July 4th).

Canadians cause got gotten to a greater extent than comfortable inward recent years almost expressing their honey for our country, but (one difference) nosotros all the same don't moving ridge the flag too apparel our patriotism on our sleeves inward quite the same means every bit our cousins due south of the edge do. But brand no mistake, nosotros are fiercely proud to live Canadian, too intend (no, KNOW) nosotros alive inward the greatest province inward the world. ;)  And I for 1 am incredibly grateful to live Canadian. I frequently state that I won the lottery of life when I was born inward Canada inward the latter one-half of the 20th century, especially every bit a woman!

This year, July 1st marks 150 years since Confederation, when 4 British North American colonies -- Ontario/Upper Canada, Quebec/Lower Canada, Nova Scotia too New Brunswick (eventually joined yesteryear others) -- joined forces every bit the Dominion of Canada, amongst the majuscule metropolis located inward Ottawa, every bit chosen yesteryear Her Majesty Queen Victoria (whose birthday nosotros celebrate every yr inward May inward recognition of her purpose inward Canada's creation). Some of my ancestors lived inward the Ottawa Valley at the time, too I sometimes wonder what they idea almost this novel arrangement, too how they marked the occasion of Confederation (if at all).

I am sometime plenty (gulp) that I tin holler upwards Canada's centennial year, 1967 -- although it definitely gives me suspension to realize that it's right away FIFTY (50) YEARS AGO!!! I was half dozen years old, living inward a modest town inward northern Saskatchewan, simply out of kindergarten that June, too entering Grade 1 inward the fall. Most "anniversaries" these days tend to live overhyped, too those were definitely simpler times, but it seems to me at that topographic point was to a greater extent than hoopla surrounding the 100-year milestone dorsum then. Or maybe it's simply that I was half dozen years old, too everything is pretty darn exciting too awe-inspiring when you're that age.

I don't holler upwards much almost the actual 24-hour interval itself (back then, it was called "Dominion Day" -- it was changed to the much blander "Canada Day" when I was inward university), except that nosotros drove the xviii miles from my grandparents' identify inward the northwestern-most corner of Minnesota, where nosotros spent several weeks every summertime of my childhood, to the Manitoba edge town where I was born too where my other grandparents farmed nearby, too watched the local fireworks display amongst some of my cousins.  I also holler upwards my woman rear taking me (& I assume my sis too) to see the Centennial Caravan (an offshoot of the Confederation Train project), a travelling display of Canadian history highlights.  And I holler upwards that my best friend's parents travelled to far-off Montreal to attend Expo 67, the world's fair.

I don't holler upwards anyone wearing special T-shirts to score the occasion (not such a large affair dorsum then), but I did deport away 3 lasting souvenirs from that year. One is inward my jewelry box to this day:  a stickpin amongst the centennial logo, which was handed out to us inward schoolhouse that fall.

My 1967 centennial pin.
It looks variety of aqua/green here, but it's genuinely blue.
(Not everyone got a pin. Some got flags, some got bumper stickers... I gauge I lucked out. ;)  ) The other 2 keepsakes are all the same at my parents' house, somewhere: a bluish flag amongst the centennial logo on it, which my woman rear bought me every bit a vantage for skillful conduct at the dentist's office. And a 45 tape of the ubiquitous subject vocal for the occasion:  "Ca-na-da"* yesteryear Bobby Gimby -- English linguistic communication on the ruby-red Influenza A virus subtype H5N1 side too French on the other (blue label). The tape got cracked too my manly soul rear applied a slice of masking tape on the French side yesteryear means of repair (oops -- non especially politically right of you, Dad ;)  ), therefore nosotros could alone play the English linguistic communication version thereafter (with clicks every bit the tape needle passed over the crack).

We don't genuinely cause got whatever plans to score this historic occasion. As amongst other holidays, I intend that when yous cause got children, yous tend to brand to a greater extent than of an endeavour to brand these occasions memorable for them -- perchance especially therefore when they are once-in-a-lifetime historic events (such every bit Centennial, or the U.S. of A. Bicentennial, which I holler upwards fifty-fifty ameliorate than Centennial, beingness fifteen at the fourth dimension vs 6...!). I don't intend we'll live heading to whatever of the community gatherings. I'm non especially keen on large crowds at the best of times -- allow solitary these days when at that topographic point are to a greater extent than sinister things to worry almost than getting separated from your political party (and of course of pedagogy that's easily remedied since the advent of cellphones...!), finding parking (and getting out of it at the same fourth dimension every bit everyone else subsequently on), too trying to avoid using the port-a-potties. ;) Plus, the conditions forecast (unfortunately) is non looking that great.

Whatever nosotros do, I'm planning on wearing the Canada T-shirt that I bought specially for the occasion, too who is retiring after 50 (!!) years amongst the CBC, the terminal thirty every bit main correspondent & anchor of "The National" nightly intelligence broadcast;  and (b)  U2 (or at least, Bono & the Edge) volition live performing!

Later on, dh & I volition in all likelihood scout the neighbourhood fireworks from our condo balcony.  There were some pretty spectacular displays going on all some us over the Victoria Day long weekend inward May, therefore I cause got high hopes for the same on Canada's 150th birthday weekend!

Happy Canada Day 150!

*  I hadn't listened to the vocal inward years earlier I went looking for a YouTube clip to part here. It seems incredibly schmaltzy from a 2017 perspective -- but damn, if I didn't larn a huge lump inward my pharynx patch listening/watching...
